Bruce Power Nuclear Tour

Friday, June 2

Bruce Power is the first privately operated nuclear facility in Canada. Its highly-skilled workforce safely and effectively operates and maintains six operating units and is actively engaged in refurbishing two additional units that were laid up in the 1990s.

Bus transportation from the Waterloo Inn will bring delegates to Bruce Power's 932-hectare site. A site orientation and safety briefing will be provided before the tour and participants will be outfitted with personal protective equipment.

Participants will tour one of Bruce Power's two nuclear generating stations and visit a Main Control Room, Turbine Hall, a Reactor Vault and possibly a Used Fuel Bay. Bruce Power's Bruce 'A' and Bruce 'B' stations currently supply 20 per cent of Ontario's electricity.

This is a private tour and is subject to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Regulations. Bruce Power reserves the right to limit access to certain parts of the tour based on security clearance requirements.

Participants will enjoy a complimentary lunch and listen to Native Storyteller Priscilla Yellowhead Tobey relate a tale of Canada' First Nations community.

After lunch, participants will tour Ontario Power Generation's Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) on the Bruce Power site and learn how low and intermediate level waste from all of Ontario's commercial nuclear generating stations is managed. They will also see how high-level radioactive used fuel from Bruce Power is stored and managed at WWMF.

While the return time to the Waterloo Inn is planned to have participants at the hotel by 6:00 pm, because of traffic in southern Ontario, this is a rough estimate only.  Participants wishing to fly out of Pearson International Airport on Friday (a 90 minute to 2 hour drive from Waterloo depending on traffic) should plan accordingly.

Maximum number of Participants: SOLD OUT
